- Look for cold-climate certification, not just a SEER number — it means the unit was tested for low-temperature heating output.
- Capacity at 5°F is the figure that matters for sizing, not capacity at 47°F.
- Variable-speed matters more than max output — long gentle cycles beat blasting on and off.
The honest footnotes
First: a leaky house makes any heating system look bad. Sealing the envelope first is what lets a right-sized heat pump carry a design-cold night — it's why the plan sequences insulation before equipment. Second: some homes keep their old furnace as a backup for extreme events. That's a design decision your plan makes explicitly, with reasons — not a hedge.
